Freedom by Design

Freedom by Design (FBD) is an American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) led community service program that utilizes the talents of architecture and design students in service to their communities. Freedom by Design helps individuals with physical, mental and/or financial challenges to live independently within their home. The organization leads projects based off a design/build platform and has designed over 10 projects since it's establishment in 2006, estimated to total over $150,000 in combined grant and funding project costs.

Previous Project

Our plan was to take the current lounge right outside of room 114 and turn it into a student study space that can be used by anyone in Renaissance hall. This included a TV screen that can be used for group projects with a wrap around bench and tables and chairs. There is also a shelving unit that can be used for books or showcase recent art pieces from the students. In the hallway, there is a wrap-around bench with sections that can be used to display more art pieces as well as an announcement section that has corkboard behind it for anyone to use.

We will be planning our next project this semester with our advisor's help and will need volunteers to help with the build next semester. When you help build with FBD, you will be able to earn real AXP hours that you can register for. There is more information on the NCARB website.

For more information on what projects we have done and what is coming up, you can visit the FBD Projects page on this website.

Donation

By engaging in accessibility issues the Freedom by Design program has the potential to bring people to the concept of architecture as a social benefit. Contributions from individuals, companies, and organizations will help us guarantee the success of the project. Tax-deductible contributions are the best and most permanent way of securing the future of this project and the program. We appreciate every contribution to bringing happiness to the people in need of our projects.

Thank you for your time and help.
